Winter hours on the main streets
October is when Upper Peninsula main streets change their hours. The visitors thin. What stays open is the winter town.
The difference shows on a weekday, not on a color weekend. A door that closes at four was never for the person who lives three blocks away and needs it at five. A door that opens for the workday, the school run, or a plain breakfast is the local economy. Marquette can carry a longer street through winter because it is a city. A smaller town on the Superior shore or in the interior cannot pretend. Its main street either keeps a few necessary hours or it doesn’t.
This piece does not name a shop or claim a set of hours for October 4. The peninsula is too large for one street’s schedule to stand for all of them. The pattern is the story. Winter hours are decided in the fall, when owners look at the next months and choose. The public sign of that choice is simple: which doors are still for residents.
If you are on a main street up here this month, read the hours posted in the window before you read the season. The lake and the trees will be written about either way. The hours are the news.
