Finding a center in a corridor city

Finding a center in a corridor city in Troy.
Finding a center in a corridor city in Troy.

A visitor can walk in Troy, but not on the road that looks most important. Big Beaver is a corridor. The walk is the civic campus at Big Beaver and I-75.

City hall, the library, and the open ground around them are the center the city actually has. You can park once and be on foot between public buildings. That is a modest walk, and it is the honest one. The boulevard will not become pleasant if you try to stroll it. The malls are destinations of a different kind, indoors and surrounded by lots. They are not the center of a city.

Early October does not change the layout. It does make the campus lawn a reasonable place to be outside. Use it that way. Do not go looking for a historic main street. Troy did not grow one. The interest is what a corridor city offers when you refuse to call the biggest road a downtown.

If the walk is over in twenty minutes, that is accurate, not a failure of the visit. Go back to the car. Detroit and the cities with older grids are other days. Troy’s useful stop is the civic ground, seen for what it is.
