The capitol and the river trail
See the capitol first. The building and the lawn are the orientation, and on a Sunday you do not need a tour desk to understand them. Walk around the outside. The dome tells you that you are in the capital. It does not tell you much else about the afternoon.
Then take the river. The Lansing River Trail follows the Grand through the city and is the walk that does not depend on a building being open. It is paved, public, and long enough that you should choose a section rather than try to finish it. Downtown to a bridge and back is plenty.
Early October is a fair day for that order. The lawn is open, the trees along the river are turning, and you are not competing with a session day for the sidewalk. Do not add a mall, a campus across the line in East Lansing, or a second city. Grand Ledge, west on the same river, is a different trip.
The capitol, then the path. That is the visit. When you have seen the building and been on the river, you have used Lansing the way a short day allows.
