Downtown Kalamazoo on a Tuesday
A Tuesday in downtown Kalamazoo is a lunch hour, not a festival. The blocks along Burdick Street, long treated as the city’s walking downtown, are where that shows.
Midday on a weekday is offices, errands, and people who are already downtown for a reason that ends. The street does not need a stage. It needs doors open between noon and one, and a sidewalk that works when nobody has been invited. A festival Saturday answers a different question, and it answers it too easily.
October 4 is a Sunday, so this edition is not a report from a Tuesday aisle. It is the assignment the street has on Tuesdays. Walk Burdick through the central blocks. Notice whether the ground floors are arranged for a person on a lunch break or for a person who came because a poster told them to.
The campuses are not this story. They feed the city, and they are a separate walk. Downtown on a Tuesday has to make sense even if no class is letting out onto it. That is the quieter test, and it is the one worth writing down.
