The river through downtown

The river through downtown in Grand Rapids.

The Grand River is the walking route through downtown Grand Rapids. The city is named for it, and the downtown bridges are how you understand the place.

Stay with the bank. The path along the river takes you under and across a run of bridges, with downtown on one side and the far bank close enough to be part of the same walk. You do not need a list of plazas. One bridge, then the next, is the route. Early October shows in the trees on the bank and in the lower light on the water.

Monroe Center is the street to step onto when you want the grid, not more path. It is a few minutes from the river. Use it as the turnaround, not as a separate tour of the whole downtown. The river was the assignment.

The lake is an hour west and not part of this stop. Grand Rapids is an inland river city. Treat it that way. Park once, walk the water, cross once, and leave before you have turned the afternoon into every district on the map.
