Downtown after the office day
Downtown Grand Rapids after the office day is a question of rooms. Which ones stay lit past six, and for whom.
The office towers empty on a weekday clock. What is left on the street is the ground floor: Monroe Center and the blocks around it, the river edge, and whatever is open for someone who is not going back upstairs. A city can look occupied from a distance because the windows are on a timer. The sidewalk tells a smaller story.
This is not a count of lights, and it is not a Sunday inventory. October 4 is a Sunday, when the office day never started. The piece is the weekday pattern. Past six, downtown is either a neighborhood of rooms that serve the evening or a district waiting for morning. Both can be true on different blocks.
Walk from the river to Monroe Center and back, after the work hour if you are there on a weekday. Notice the difference between a lit lobby and a lit room that a person can enter. The Grand River will still be there either way. It is not the answer to the question. The rooms are.
