The block that stayed open
The street is Saginaw Street in downtown Flint. One block, not a tour of every district, and whether it still has a reason to be open on an ordinary day.
Saginaw Street is the old commercial spine. Some rooms are in use and some are not. The useful fact is local and small: a door on that street that keeps hours for people who are already downtown, not a door that opens only when someone has scheduled a reason to visit. A block can look revived in a photograph and still be closed on a Tuesday afternoon.
This edition does not name a tenant or claim what was unlocked on October 4. Sunday is a thin day for that test. The weekday test is the one that counts. Walk Saginaw Street far enough to see a run of storefronts, and notice which ones face the sidewalk as if someone might come in from the bus or the next building.
The Flint River is a block or so off this conversation, and it matters, but it is not a substitute for the street. A path can be open while the block is not. The story here is the block that stayed open for the city that is already there.
