Life behind the retail frontage

Life behind the retail frontage in Delta Township.
Life behind the retail frontage in Delta Township.

Delta Township is the west side of the Lansing area, and the part drivers know is the retail frontage along Saginaw Highway. The lots are large, the signs are tall, and none of that is the neighborhood.

Behind the frontage the township is houses, school grounds, and connector streets that do not show up on a highway exit. People who live here do the big-lot errands and then go home to a block that looks like any other late-century suburb. The public life is the school calendar and the township itself, not a downtown hour.

The Grand River is the natural edge, closer to Grand Ledge than to the retail strip. It is easy to forget in a place this oriented to the highway. It is still there, and it is the part of the township that is not a parking lot.

This is not a report on which stores were busy on October 4. Sunday shopping is a different use of the same frontage. The news is the split: a commercial road that stands in for a main street, and a residential township behind it that does not need the road to be one.
