Bay City is the last city of any size before the drive north starts to feel like Up North. The stop, if you make one, is the river, not a detour through every neighborhood.

The Saginaw River runs through the middle of town on its way to Saginaw Bay. Downtown’s river walk is on the east bank, beside Wenonah Park, with the bridges in view and the west side across the water. It is a short walk. That is the point. You can leave the car, see the river, and be back on the road without turning the day into a tour.

Early October is a good hour for it. The summer boat traffic is over, the trees along the bank are turning, and the path does not require a festival. If the wind is coming off the bay, the walk is colder than the highway suggested. That is still the right stop.

Going north from here, the towns get smaller and the lake gets closer. Do not try to add one of those towns before dark and also do Bay City properly. The riverfront is the visit. Up North starts when you leave it.
