Both banks of the Saginaw

Both banks of the Saginaw in Bay City.
Both banks of the Saginaw in Bay City.

Bay City is split by the Saginaw River, and the split is the local fact. One bank is not a view of the other. Each side has its own streets, and the bridges are what make them one city.

The east side holds the tighter downtown, with Wenonah Park along the river as the public edge. The west side is lower and more spread out, a second set of blocks facing back across the water. People who live here already know which bank an errand is on. A Sunday drive treats the river as scenery and misses that.

Nothing in this piece counts the cars on the bridges or names a shop that was open on October 4. The standing geography is enough. The river is wide here, close to the bay, and the downtowns look at each other because the city was built that way, not because a waterfront project asked them to.

Walk one bank, cross, and walk the other only as far as the first real street. If you stay on the park side the whole time, you have seen the river and not the city. The news is that both banks are still in use as ordinary places, not as a single postcard.
